GRAPEVINE
v Leave it to Groucho to summarize it all so nicely. His phrase is a perfect reduction of the Buddhist view. Yes, life is difficult. Yes, life is expensive. Yes, life has its trials. But isn’t it still great to be alive? Of course…read on.
v I have received confirmation that “Turning Of The Wheel” radio show and all shows on Contact Talk Radio are being picked up by 2 SATELLITE links. What does this mean? Satellite radio brings a clear, high-definition digital signal that fires through the atmosphere with the clarity of light. With it goes all the goodness and mercy the shows provide. Positive vibrations abound. All shows will be brought to a brand new level of availability that will encompass the globe. More news to follow. Trust me, the markets and broadcast areas will be enormous. Dig-it-all, its digital!!
v Watch this spot for even BIGGER exciting news next month. I have something up my sleeve that I will reveal at the time. Wait and see.
v I attended a health fair in Bedford that brought to me the most interesting people. People from all walks of life. People are seeking; and the search is good.
v All the radio shows are sitting up on iTunes as podcasts and you can listen or subscribe to them for FREE. They are a smash! Click here: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=264837097

v My goal is to bring intelligent guests to the show to help discuss and educate. Log on to the shows chat room and ask those questions you are afraid to ask on the air. http://host50.123flashchat.com/contacttalkradio/
v There is a web-forum that also allows you to offer ideas, discussions and comments on shows to come or shows gone by. I have a regular site on the Contact Talk Radio web so check there for the calendar of guests. Please mark your calendars and call with questions that day. Here is the link: http://www.contacttalkradio.com/hosts/chrisflisher.htm I have following guests lined up for February.
-Feb 7, 2008 – Paul Laffoley -“Art and The Cosmic Citizen”
-Feb. 14, 2008 – Nancy Wallace -“Love and Timing”
-Feb 21, 2008 – Bruce Scofield – “The Mayan Calendar and 12/21/2012”
-Feb 28, 2008 - Ray Grasse – Symbols and Astrology”
AS ABOVE, SO BELOW:
More and more I am amazed at the depth and richness of astrology. The other day I was a participant at a health and wellness fair in Bedford, MA. It was a gathering of healers and readers who offered everything from massage to tarot. Surprisingly, I was the only astrologer. However, I was busy with readings for the entire time I was there. I delivered short, 20 minute chart interpretations for a very diverse group of people. I was struck by two things; one was their lack of knowledge about professional astrology (as opposed to “newspaper astrology”) and the other was the flash of recognition that beamed across their faces as the charts came to life. It was truly an “ah-ha” moment for each of them. One man was a young video producer, one was a kindergarten teacher, one was a retired entrepreneur, another was a grieving mother, and so on. The diversity of the people was obvious and yet the richness of the experience for each of them was profound. It proves again how powerful professional astrology can be. Part science, part art; the wonder of astrology is the indescribable flash of recognition that seeps into your spirit as your soul is revealed. It is truly a wonder.

Forecast:
We all know that cycles come and go. Remember Frank Sinatra singing “That’s Life?, (“Ridin’ high in April, shot down in May. But I’ll be back on top, back on top in June.)” This time is no different. Just as Mars finally stations direct and begins to move forward, we are teased by another Mercury retrograde cycle. Mars has been in retrograde for about ==fill-in== and has finally spun around at 24 degrees Cancer. The forward motion of Mars is revealed through ambition, action, drive, and motive. When Mars goes direct, all of the aforementioned concepts begin to appear again. If you have a strong Mars placement in your chart, you may have felt stuck in quagmire over the last few months. The time has come to finally move again.
We must first spend a few cycles with our friend Mercury. Mercury is all about communication and all things connected to that topic. Read the section on the third house below and you’ll get a much better idea of the types of slow-downs and issues you might have with Mercury retrograde. Rather than run for cover use this time to renew, review, revamp, rediscover. In short, anything with a “re” prefix is up for examination during a Mercury Retrograde. Mercury will station direct (go forward) on Feb 19. If you can hold off on contracts and big launches while Mercury is retrograde, it will make the process much easier. Trust me on that one!
Additionally, we have Saturn retrograde at 7 degrees Virgo. Saturn is about responsibility and duty. Although Saturn does fairly well in Virgo, since detail and order are very Saturnian characteristics, the retrograde motion makes progress appear to slow down, just as with Mars. As always, it is a mix of influences and themes. Be flexible and adapt and the doors will open in due season.
The other significant event recently is the ingress (entry) of Pluto into Capricorn. This is a major astrological event. Pluto rips down and rebuilds anything that is not working in your life or in the progress of mankind. The fact that the stock market has fallen apart, and the world economic structure is tenuous (at best) is clearly the work of transiting Pluto. Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign. Capricorn rules institutions (governments, banks, etc). Capricorn also lords over dynamic earth-based initiatives. The time has come to clean up the planet. There is no better opportunity than with Pluto in Capricorn. The awakening we are all experiencing, will manifest in saving the planet. If we do NOT take action, Pluto will see to it we do. Best to be proactive rather than awaiting a rude awakening.
For details on the impact of these planets in your chart, contact me for an in-depth reading. Focus on positive events and always be open to possibilities. Personal readings are always available by emailing Chris at chris@chrisflisher.com. Visit http://www.chrisflisher.com/astrology for Fees and Services.
Astrology 101: The Third House
I made a conscious decision to spread out my discussion of the houses over a series of newsletters. They are so important and rich that they are best understood in small doses. To date, I have described the first and second houses. This month we knock on the door of the third house. As the door to the third house opens we begin to communicate. Conversation, connecting, intellect, journaling, meetings, correspondence, speeches, presentations, sales pitches, studies, students, nerves and the nervous systems all reside under the roof of the third house. The planets in your individual charts that fall into, or aspect (connect by angle) the third house determine how you communicate. Communication is far more than a simple spoken dialog. It encompasses all forms of expression. Body language is expression. Art is expression. Dance is expression. Laughter and loving are expressions…and so on. In short, anything you give out or exude is a form of communication. The third house is ruled by Mercury and Gemini, the planet and sign of communication. It is no small coincidence that communication is one of the very first houses. Look for planets and the sign that occupy your third house and you’ll discover how you communicate.
Another important facet of the third house is travel and short trips. This is especially true for trips to siblings and relatives. The importance of family and communication is vital to our core values. Within it lies the secret to purity and light.

SPIRIT IN ART:
“Words” – Since I focused on the third house this month, I found it appropriate to display my mandala titled “Words.” The color and the surrounding text illustrate the importance of communication.

© 2005 Chris Flisher
The following text is excerpted from Chris’s forthcoming book, “Mandalas: Spirit In Art”
Patience, compassion, grace, tolerance, gratitude, humility, laughter. They are just words, but what images and feelings do they emote? Think long and hard about each word. They bring some heavy images no matter how they are spoken.
Round and round we go, in a swirl of misplaced passion. If passion and motive were well-guided where might we be today? Perhaps much farther along that we are. People argue, “They are just words.” Still, beneath each word lies the emotion; the kernel of what it means to be human. At our core we are basic and share so much in common. Why is co-existence such a difficult concept? Like a record or a compact disc, the mandala spins in eternity spitting out the words as they pass by. Do they stick to people, or do they simply flail in the atmosphere only to be lost on the fleeting winds of human emotion?
“Words have weight. Carry them wisely ”

AS ABOVE, SO BELOW:
The coming year signals a huge shift in the collective patterns and order of the globe. Human sub-conscious is at a critical evolutionary point and soon all will be revealed. We are at a historical point in time where a shake-up is in order and easily visible on the horizon. With Pluto transiting over a sensitive degree of a cardinal sign (zero degrees Capricorn), we can expect a major departure in the political, economic, and environmental landscape of the nation, the planet, and humanity in general. Pluto is all about transformation; tearing down and rebuilding; reformation and revolution; restructure and correction.
We are due for a major correction. We have drifted far off course as Pluto moved through Sagittarius and forged religious and political disparities. Now, as Pluto moves into a very powerful degree, we can expect to see dramatic shifts in how we live. Whether it is oil, the economy, or the earth itself; it is clear we are in for a change. Capricorn is a cardinal (initiator) earth sign and symbolizes large institutions, governments, and basic earth-bound ideals. The changing course of the planet as heralded by Al Gore is clearly an indication of the looming presence of Pluto. What can we expect? Financial correction is eminent for one. Pay your debt down; place your future in stable earth-based ventures. Take charge and think in terms of the earth. As always, being forewarned is to be forearmed. The fact that we have national elections coming to the fore is no small example of irony. It is likely that the outcome of this coming election in the United States will point the course of this country and its role in the world with a much larger impact than usual. Curiously, irony is not a word common to astrologers. Irony speaks to coincidence and events juxtaposed for impact and outcome. Astrology illustrates the direction and the stage setting with complete clarity.

Forecast:
The most significant aspects at this time involve Mars and Saturn. Both of these powerful planets are in retrograde. Mars is the great initiator; the motivator; and represents motion, aggression, desire, and ambition. With this powerful planet in backward motion we see progress grinding to a halt or events that unfold which represent a setback. The death of Benazir Bhutto is no small event. The impact of her departure will likely further destabilize an extremely volatile part of the world. This is progress in reverse. This is Mars in retrograde. Careers, political reversals, and upheavals are the typical events we see during this type of transit. Mars is opposing Pluto. Mars is in Cancer, and Pluto is in the late degrees of Sagittarius. Sagittarius represents politics, ideals, and religious beliefs. Cancer is the sign of the mother and the emotional fabric of humanity. Is it not obvious that a powerful woman leader be slain while these two planets oppose each other? Clearly not. Cardinal signs signify beginnings, and by contrast, their ends. Without a beginning there is no end. This is not to judge the outcome, but rather the significance of the event and, more importantly, the timing of the event.
With similar weight and significance, we look at Saturn, the planet that rules Capricorn. Saturn began retrograde motion in mid-December. With such a powerful planet retrograde in Virgo we can expect to see issues of service, health and detailed research come to light. That may indicate a re-evaluation in any of those areas or it may point to a renewed approach to existing patterns; a departure, in any event. As the new world order begins to crumble and new foundations are set in place, the review of any ill-founded pattern is important and timely. Saturn is well-placed in Virgo. This means it is comfortable and productive in this sign. It also means that positive results can come as a result during the re-evaluation. Since Saturn rules Capricorn its placement in Virgo finds it in a harmonious or easy aspect to the Sun during the last days of 2007 and early days of 2008. Jupiter is also moving through Capricorn over the next few weeks will also be in a harmonious aspect to Saturn. When Saturn, (responsibility) favorably aspects Jupiter (expansion) we can expect to see positive results from our research, service, and health-related efforts.
For details on the impact of these planets in your chart, contact me for an in-depth reading. Focus on positive events and always be open to possibilities. Personal readings are always available by emailing Chris at chris@chrisflisher.com. Visit http://www.chrisflisher.com/astrology for Fees and Services.
Astrology 101: Orbs
An orb is an area of influence dictated by degree(s) that points to the impact or relationship of the aspect. There are set, acceptable orbs of influence for each planetary inter-relationship. This is basic geometry as seen by the degrees of the circle. Any two planets can have a relationship depending on their position on the wheel. The closer, or tighter, the orb, the more powerful the impact of the relationship. For example, if Saturn were to square Jupiter at 10 degrees Sagittarius; the points leading up to (applying) that exact degree, AND the degrees falling away from (separating) are called the orb. The tighter the orb; the more significant the affect of the relationship. A one degree orb is much tighter than a 5 degree orb and, as a result, has a much greater influence. Applying degrees are considered more significant that separating degrees, with the idea that emerging energy is more powerful than waning energy. Generally most relationships are influential at 6 degrees on either side of the exact placement. Using the example above, the orb of influence would include from 4 degrees Sagittarius all the way over to 16 degrees Sagittarius would be valid and considered influential because they’d be six degrees on either side of the exact degree. 10 minus six is four and ten plus six is sixteen. Orbs are significant when reading a chart because they indicate the power of the planetary association.

SPIRIT IN ART:
“Cirque D’Ole” © 2005 Chris Flisher
The following text is excerpted from Chris’s forthcoming book, “Mandalas: Spirit In Art”
This mandala has a sense of humor. Gone are the traditional lines and boundaries so familiar in the others. Typical mandalas are very symmetrical and even and patterned after a repeated symbol. In this case, the blend of reds, yellows and oranges offset by the deep shimmering blues and
purples lend a circus-like affect to this wheel. The watercolor washes allow the colors to blend and bleed into each other and are reminiscent of a circus tent. The free form character of the outward flowing lines implies a web of magical intrigue and mystery. The offset and asymmetry of the extending lines are drawn from architecture and architects who left an impression on me such Antonin Gaudi of Barcelona and the great I.M. Pei.
Beneath all spirituality there lies humor. Laugh at life and you will live. He who laughs last, laughs last.

->It used to be… “Absence makes the heart grow fonder”, but I like how Barenaked Ladies have twisted it better since it applies to being fully present. To be fully present means to live in the now. A life of absence, escape, and detachment leaves your heart weak and perhaps open to fungi? Ha! Be here now…

Contemporary astrology is more accurate and complete than it has ever been. The computer is a natural blessing for astrology. The scientific data (data of degree, location, planetary and otherwise) and computers have made the task of chart construction accurate and timely. The data portion of astrology rests easily at our fingertips. However accurate the facts may be, there is no substitute for true chart interpretation. The human element can only come from human intervention. That is the art of astrology. There is no one-size-fits-all personality and an accurate chart reading brings that fully to light. It bears noting simply because the “gem” of astrology lies in art of the astrologer. Take the scientific data for its value, but allow astrologers to provide you the depth you require for guidance. If you have specific questions or want an accurate reading, you can always email me at chris@chrisflisher.com.

FORECAST:
Last month I spoke of the significance of Mercury retrograde and its impact on how we communicate. During December and into late January we are faced with a different kind of retrograde. Starting on November 15th, Mars, the planet of drive, ambition, and action crawls backwards through the middle to early degrees of Cancer and into Gemini, before it moves forward in late January. You may feel slow progress and frustration at this time. Mars is not especially happy in Cancer to begin with and since Cancer the rules the moon and all things emotional, maternal, and domestic, Mars feels out of sorts in this watery climate. Mars is all about fire, energy, drive, spark, and progress. Going retrograde puts a clamp on all that fiery motion and literally throws a wet blanket on the red planet. What should we expect? For most of us it can be a time of turmoil on the Cancerian topics of maternity, domesticity and emotion. Issues of home, family, emotions (good and bad) come to light and progress seems to grind to a halt. All energy has a counterpart, though, and Mars (fire) in Cancer (water) signals steam. Yet that is where he is. Many of us find ourselves in situations that are insurmountable or unappealing, and we must struggle to find the light in the darkness. Take the time to refocus on the issues of family and emotion and prepare yourself for the forward sling as Mars hurls forward on January 30th.
Another significant planetary shift involves Uranus. This planet has been back and forthing in Pisces for a long time, but it will finally begin moving forward on November 25th. This outer planet rules rebellion, upset, and sudden changes (among many other things.) It is also called a transpersonal planet; meaning that its affect is felt primarily by generations. Generational astrology is called mundane. Mundane does not imply boring or trivial, but, rather, large scale and applicable to all people. When Uranus moves forward, it begins at 14 degrees Pisces and slowly crawls towards Aries. Don’t panic. Uranus will not enter Aries until March of 2011. Until then it will trigger events in water and mutable signs. For details on the impact of these planets in your chart, contact me for an in-depth reading. Focus on positive events and always be open to possibilities. Personal readings are always available by emailing Chris at chris@chrisflisher.com. Visit http://www.chrisflisher.com/astrology for Fees and Services.
ASTROLOGY 101: Winter Solstice and Capricorn
As many of you know the shortest day of the year is rapidly approaching. The “day” is actually still 24 hours, but the sun sets early due to the angle of the earth. Daylight decreases each day until the solstice draws near, heralding another turning of the wheel. The solstice is a celebration because it is a moment in time that signals an end (to darkness) and a beginning (to light.) The beginning is at one with the end. Pagan and earth-based beliefs view it as a sacred day of new beginnings, and rightfully so. A typical celebration includes building a huge bonfire (I like to use the Christmas tree from the year before.) Celebrants then throw into the fire anything they want to be rid of. It can be a credit card, an old lover (not the person of course, just some sort of tangible representation of them, mind you), your weight, your job, your bad habits. In short, whatever is holding you back goes into the fire. Then, you take an oak twig, toss it into the same fire with a wish for the year to come. The whole routine is similar to a New Year’s resolution, but much more dramatic since the offering is connected to the cycles of the planet.
That time also signals the arrival of Capricorn on the zodiacal wheel. Capricorn is the sign that straddles our conventional calendar, including time in both the departing and the approaching year. Despite this seemingly tenuous position, Capricorn stands as one of the strongest and most steadfast signs of the entire zodiac. A cardinal earth sign, Capricorns are known for hard work, tenacity, and extraordinary resiliency. As cardinal signs they are starters and doers who are often found building and plotting elaborate yet, grounding projects. Driven to succeed and excel, these noble people are often, slow, methodical and goal driven. To know one is to know a hard worker, good employee, and well-rounded, patient individual.

SPIRIT IN ART:
“StarMan” – “Oh, little star of bedlam…” Ha, ha. Well the world is in a state of bedlam. I thought it was appropriate to increase awareness by reminding everyone to put forth their best intention. Perhaps we can turn this big ship around.
© 2005 Chris Flisher
The following text is excerpted from Chris’s forthcoming book, “Mandalas: Spirit In Art”
“StarMan” plays on the concepts of fame, fortune, and that which sparkles. That which sparkles, draws sparkle. That which frowns, draws frowns. This is not a simple reduction of the laws of attraction, but rather a euphemism for giving and getting in the most positive manner possible. When out and about; walking or running errands; we must pause and delight in all we encounter. In return the universe opens doors and delights us with the pleasure of warmth, compassion and peaceful coexistence. Energy is an exchange of electricity and a direct link to our core; our chemistry; and our vibratory center. As we vibrate, so does all that we touch. If we vibrate with joy and laughter, the joy and laughter returns. If we vibrate with “shock and awe;” guess what happens?
“A smile flashing through the ether is humanity without flaw.
A world without malice, devoid of shock and awe. ”

• “Turning Of The Wheel” radio show continues to gather momentum. On one show in early October I had 6 callers from around the globe. That may seem small, but trust me, after years as a radio host, callers are a very hard-won indicator that the show is working. Thank you for calling and please keep it up. You will begin to notice a shift and some new guests coming on. My biggest news is the appearance of Alex and Allyson Grey. Those of you unfamiliar with Grey’s work should check out www.alexgrey.com and see if it doesn’t stir you. Also of note is Michele Avanti’s appearance which is on the topic of astrocartography. Did you know that where you live is a determining factor in your personal success and happiness? Listen to Michele Avanti as she explains how to find where you are supposed to live for your sign.
• All the radio shows are sitting up on iTunes as podcasts and you can listen or subscribe to them for FREE. They are a smash!

AS ABOVE, SO BELOW:
Astrology is as much a science as it is an art. Much like the manner in which medicine is administered, astrology also involves a degree of practice. The jokes are easy when you think of doctors practicing, but that is exactly what they do. Not all diagnoses are easy and a trial-and-error method is often the choice. Repeated patterns and results eventually indicate what works and what doesn’t. That data can only come from experimentation and analysis. The same is true with astrology. It is a science that uses thousands of years of observation to form conclusions. The science of astrology comes from the mathematical alignment and inter-relationship between planets as they relate to the individual’s birth chart. Each planet is an object with motion and charge. That charge interacts with other planets and creates tension from which events and action arise. It is that interaction that we refer to as aspects. It is the degree and angles that dictate the outcome of the relationship whether a positive broadening experience or challenging and limiting experience. When combined with the intuitive interpretation of a qualified astrologer you have an art and a science that offers undeniable accuracy. Trust me.

Forecast:
Last month I discussed spoke of the significance of Mercury retrograde and its impact on the manner in which we communicate. It impact will soon fade as November rolls on. The small planet will begin its ingress (movement) into forward motion on November 1st and much of the communicative ambiguity will begin to dissipate. Elsewhere in the cosmic realm we have a slight bit of tension between Venus and Jupiter as they form a square (90 degree) angle. These typically indicate career paths and the complexities that go with making hard decisions. Another potential hotspot building up is a tense angle between Venus and Pluto. Venus is all about love, money, prosperity. When aspected with Pluto, it indicates a transformation in the way you approach those. On a positive note, gigantic Jupiter, the planet of expansion and growth is coming into conjunction (direct alignment) with Pluto. Look for major changes in the way in which problems are solved on a global level. New dialogs, new methods, and strategies abound. Not surprising when we see the tensions beginning to boil with Russia, Iran and the US. Timing is everything and let’s hope the universe lends a hand in solving these potentially huge gulfs. Focus on positive events and always be open to possibilities. Personal readings are always available by emailing Chris at chris@chrisflisher.com. Astrology 101: Aspects
Quite simply, aspects are the inter-relationship of two planets by degrees in an astrology chart. These aspects are based on the 360 degrees of a circle. If we divide the wheel into 12 equal pieces, or sections, like a pizza, we have 12 pieces of 30 degrees each (12×30=360); the number of degrees in a circle. When an astrology chart is drawn up, the location of each planet is measured by degree within a sign. For example, Sun at 12 degrees Aries, Moon at 6 degrees Cancer and so on. Each sign has 30 degrees. Each planet lands at some degree point within a sign in the individual chart. The relationship between any two planets(or more) in a chart are called the aspects.
For sake of understanding, we’ll stick with the two types of relationships that are most important to people; those that represent ease and those that represent challenge. An easy aspect is one that is either 0 degrees or 120 degrees. Zero degrees is called a “conjunction” and it means that two planets join forces and combine their energy to serve the person. It also means that they are in the same sign and close by degree. For example Sun conjunct Moon would mean that both planets are close by degree. 120 degrees is called a “trine” and represents planets that are in the same “element” as each other; for example Sun trine Moon would indicate that the two planets are roughly 120 degrees apart and were located in the same element within a chart. For example; both in fire, or earth, or water, or air.
By contrast, the challenging aspects are those that are either opposite (180 degrees; half of 360 degrees) or 90 degrees apart. These are called “opposition” for the 180 degree angle and “square” for the 90 degree angle. Planets that are in opposition or squared are in the same “mode” of the chart. There are three modes; cardinal (leaders and starters); fixed (immovable and stubborn); or mutable (flexible and adaptable). Any knowledge of basic geometry you may have will substantiate these degrees. Simply get out your compass.
To clarify element and mode, remember that same elements get along with each other; hence the conjunction and the trine, while modes represent similar drives but quite different elements; hence the tension or challenge. Knowing these basic rules of astrology can greatly enhance your enjoyment and understanding of the complexity involved in human personalities and interaction. And if you didn’t inherently know that and you met someone that you either “clicked with” or didn’t, these angles would illustrate why. Aspects are a major part of astrology and a tool we use to understand the character, drives and emotions of the individual. Ask any astrologer about the term “aspects” and they will immediately know what you are asking. For more in-depth discussion of astrology, contact Chris. Personal readings are always available by emailing Chris at chris@chrisflisher.com. Visit http://www.chrisflisher.com/astrology for Fees and Services.
SPIRIT IN ART:
“Om Sweet Om” – An obvious play on words, “Om Sweet Om” is a playful homage to the Tibetan/Buddhist mantra, “Om mani padme om,” with a distinct Western twist. The Buddha had a great sense of humor. Laughter is the medicine.
© 2005 Chris Flisher
The following text is excerpted from Chris’s forthcoming book, “Mandalas: Spirit In Art”
“Om Sweet Om”
“Om, om on the range.
Where the fear and the lack of hope prey.
Where seldom a word of glad
tidings is heard,
And the stars light up the Milky Way.”
…or something like that….
The mandala here consists of the Tibetan characters for the Buddhist chant of Om Mani Padme Om. The chant frees the mind from the past and removes the spectre of the future with its steady drone and focus on the breath. It is from the breath and the slight space beween the rise and fall of our lungs that we find the peace we all seek. Some say that god lies between the in and out of our breath. That silent space where neither in nor out exists. Do we know the power we hold in our breath? Only if you step into the fold and embrace its power will you feel the space.
Breathe in, breathe out
As within, so without

AS ABOVE, SO BELOW:
Last month I discussed the idea of recognizing all signs as ours. This is important to recognize when learning astrology. That single concept answers so many questions people have when they discover characteristics of their individual charts. To have Mars in Scorpio, for example, might explain physical drives and needs. Moon in Cancer would indicate sensitivity and a strong femininity in a person, whereas Venus in Aries represents someone who displays their heart openly with affection and charm It all fits in the end. Trust me. If you have specific questions you can always email me at chris@chrisflisher.com. Archived issues of this newsletter are located here. http://www.chrisflisher.com/radio_000.htm
Forecast:
Before I begin a discussion on, “The Second House” (Astrology 101), I want to alert you to a few significant events this month. That oft-dreaded transit (movement) of Mercury in retrograde (motion) begins on the 12th of October. Despite all the bad press Mercury gets during retrograde, it’s important to focus on the positive events that happen when we return to issues. The prefix “re” forces us to do just that; re-view, re-fund, re-new and so on. Even though going over the past can be laborious, it is also often necessary. It’s how we get things right. How many times have you acted on something only to realize it was a mistake in the end. Re-trospect allows you to right that wrong. Hence re-trograde can be a valuable transit. Mercury goes retrograde for roughly three weeks. Typical responses to Mercury retrograde are broken computers, missed communications and all things that deal with personal in! terchange. At the same time Mars begins his transit through Cancer. Cancer is the sign of emotions, maternal energy, and all things domestic. Mars is predominantly a male energy source and feels a little out of sorts in this landscape of femininity. Therefore you’ll likely find yourself driven towards the home and emotional, maternal issues. This is especially true depending on how Mars is aspected (placed) in your chart. Elsewhere, Saturn continues to settle into a comfortable spot in Virgo. Virgo is a sign that represents service, attention to detail, and health. Saturn is the planet that embodies responsibility, accountability and hard work. The combination of the two allows us to get down to details and solve some long-overdue tasks. The rewards come in time as issues around health, money, service to others and organization all come to light under Saturn’s transit through Virgo. My friend and astrologe! r Joyce Levine mentioned to me the other day during the radio show that more millionaires are Virgos than any other sign. Saturn in Virgo is a great time to put energy into making that dollar work for you. Focus on positive events and always be open to possibilities.
Astrology 101: The Second House:
The second house is the house that applies to money. (I bet that got your attention.) Money, personal possessions, financial relationships, and all things material are found in the second house. As I mentioned before, a “house” is where the influence is felt in your life. If you think of astrology as a play, the house is the stage set. It’s where the action is. Each house represents a different area. The planets you have in your second house will define your relationship to money and all things financial and material. Now, what if you have no planets in your second house? This can happen and it simply means that you are not focused on money to the extent of another who may have that placement. For example, Mars in the second house indicates a strong drive to gather money since Mars is about drive and ambition.
The second house is best described by a series of adjectives including; money, finance, banks, banker, budgets, cash, checks, debts, personal earning capacity, freedom, financial losses, gifts bestowed or received, income, inheritance of power, “I” possess, investments, material resources, possessions, negotiable assets, partner’s death, personal values, physical senses, self-worth, stockbrokers, talents, and wealth. Ultimately, the second house represents an awareness of the tangible components of life. By no small coincidence, the second house is directly opposite the eighth house, the house of death. It stands to reason that the second house would, therefore, reflect money, rebirth and inheritance and surely it does. The best way to understand this relationship in your personal chart is to look to the planets in your second house or those aspected (angled) to it. SPIRIT IN ART:
“So What” - This month’s mandala is a nod to my great love of Miles Davis. “So What” is the opening cut to Davis’s seminal album “Kind Of Blue.” This is the one album that I own that I can listen to at any time of day and be satisfied and inspired. It is also the one album I have never tired of hearing. The music is modal by definition and has such depth that I continually hear something new with each listen; so will you.
© 2004 Chris Flisher
The following text is excerpted from Chris’s forthcoming book, “Mandalas: Spirit In Art”
“So What”
Named after the classic jazz album by Miles Davis, this mandala encompasses a wide range of emotions, symbology, and spirituality. The chakras, the Chinese symbols for the five elements: earth, air, water, fire and metal, forgiveness, love, Buddha, and peace surround the central figure known as Om. The swirl of color and sparkling effervescence give the impression of an exotic Moroccan market. At the same time the disparate, unrelated symbols all point to the universal goodness of mankind. The lotus theme at each corner surrounds and lifts the central themes to the level where they transcend the ordinary in a heady swirl of oneness. All is one in the world.
Free your heart from hatred.
Free your mind from worries.
Live simply.
Give more.
Expect less.

The Arts League of Lowell (ALL) new exhibit, “Kerouac - Artists and Writers Project” officially opened on August 19th with a reception at the ALL Gallery on Market Street. The piece I created is titled “Yantra” and is symbolic of the opposite energies that exist in our universe. We are a world of polarities…male/female; positive/negative; black/white; right/wrong…
Lowell Arts Walk is underway until October. They are going to collecting ballots on the displays. Vote for me!

AS ABOVE, SO BELOW:
Last month I discussed the First House. I’ll pick up with the discussion of the remaining houses in upcoming newsletters. I didn’t want to overwhelm you with the prospect of going through the houses one by one. If you have specific questions you can always email me at chris@chrisflisher.com. Archived issues of this newsletter are located here. http://www.chrisflisher.com/radio_000.htm
Before I begin a discussion on, “We Are All The Signs” (Astrology 101), I want to alert you to a few significant cosmic events this month. Mercury has been right at home lately in detail-oriented Virgo. Virgo is all about research and communication and Mercury is very happy there since it is familiar turf for him. It’s what he does best. He moves on after the fifth of the month, so maximize those deals and negotiations while he still has this enhanced power. Just as Mercury leaves Virgo, Venus finally gets legs and goes direct on September 9th working her way through the middle and late degrees of bold and powerful Leo. If you have experienced frustration about love and money (more than usual…ha ha), then events should begin to improve as the planet of love and money goes direct (moves forward). NOTE: Planets don’t actually move backwards in the universe, but they appear to move backwards within our visible realm from the earth. The impact is clearly felt as the retrograde planet emits a different energy during that time. It IS important to know this, trust me on that one.
Saturn, the wise and wonderful planet of responsibility and accountability, will enter Virgo on September 2nd. It’s actually a good placement for Saturn since Virgo is very much a research-and-detail kind of sign. Service, detail, research and hard work all do well under Saturn’s influence. Many fear this great planet and see it as a malefic, but if you are hard working and honest, it simply helps not hinders. If you have any planets in earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) or water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) signs you’ll feel positive effects over the next few years.
Also significant and lingering will be the after affect of the eclipse that took place on August 28. If you have significant planets in Virgo, Pisces, Gemini or Sagittarius you will feel the results for at least the next month, or at least witness the beginnings of events. Be open to possibilities and view the universe with an open mind. Eclipses tend to bring about changes in the house in which they transit, usually up to about a month after. They often alert you to changes underfoot as well, but to be forewarned is to be forearmed. Be prepared and understand that all events, good and bad, happen at the right time. Eclipses often bring unexpected results. For example, the Boston Red Sox won the World Series in 2004 during an eclipse, shaking an 86-year curse. Focus on positive events and be open to possibilities.
Astrology 101:
We are all signs: Do you get frustrated when you read the newspaper horoscopes? Do they appear too generalized and not specific enough? Well guess what? They are all of that. They are far too generalized to apply to EVERYONE. The one-size-fits-all approach gives astrology a bad name. There is no way the information could be specific enough to apply to millions. Should all Virgos buy a lottery ticket on Tuesday?. Do all Sagittarians need to focus on the higher self on Wednesday? Should you avoid pitfalls at the office on Thursday if you are a Cancer? NO, of course not. The truth is, we are actually a composite of many signs. A properly cast chart reveals the position of all the planets in our solar system. Each planet has significance and defines the characteristics of the individual via the placement of the planet in your chart. A properly cast chart is based on birth date/time/place. Just as the Sun falls in a position which identifies your primary astrology “sign,” so do the other planets fall in signs. And therein lies the magic of true, professional astrology. This is how a professional astrologer discovers the depth and richness of the character as seen in the chart.
For example; John Lennon was a Libra (Sun sign) born in October. His chart shows Moon in Capricorn, Mercury in Scorpio, Venus in Virgo, Mars in Libra, Jupiter in Taurus, Saturn in Taurus, Uranus in Taurus, Neptune in Virgo and Pluto in Leo. All of these planets indicate a portion of the character that made John Lennon. Of course in this discussion you have to believe in the power of the cosmic energy that allows those characteristics to form and materialize. In Lennon’s case, we have Moon in Capricorn which indicates a chilling capacity for callousness. This is very true since, Lennon was hardened by his losses as a child. Mercury in Scorpio indicates a quick biting wit; an acerbic tongue that fueled his political statements. Venus in Virgo allowed him to express deep sentiments regarding humanity with logic and detail towards musical perfection; clearly the case. Elsewhere his drive was exhibited through Mars which was in Libra, the sign of balance, equanimity, diplomacy. Jupiter brought out his love of the common man and all things earthly, while Saturn provided a sense of responsibility in that same arena….and so on.
John Lennons’ chart simply illustrates the true manner in which astrology works. And it does work. A tried and true skeptic finds himself nodding as the pieces fall in place.
If you have to get a quick read on a person, the best manner is determine the sun sign, the sign of the moon, and the rising sign, also know as the ascendant. The Sun indicates the ego and foundational characteristics, while the moon draws attention to the emotional character of the individual. The ascendant indicates the outward demeanor of the person and can be very different than the sun sign. For a much more detailed and incredibly accurate glimpse of yourself or a person in your life, get a full professional reading. In truth, we are a composite of all signs

SPIRIT IN ART:
“Blueness Greeness” – This month’s mandala is a departure from past issues. Rather than offer insight or comfort, this mandala reflects on a journey to Clarksdale, Mississippi. The following text is excerpted from Chris’s forthcoming book, “Mandalas: Spirit In Art”
On The Delta
Woke up on the delta, heat pouring down
Muddy, Mr. Johnson, and Wolf all in town
Haunting, mystery, racial divide
Who says I got God on my side.
Sound so steely, cold and blue
Renders a passion, a pain that’s true
Sleepy Spanish moss, Camellias in bloom
Dusty road, cotton fields, rain in June.
Raw, shredded chords ragged and moan
Cries of pain, a long way from home
Lord I got to pay my dues
And everyday I sing the blues.
Blue in green, sunlight stream
Smoky caverns, heartache dream
Been here before, hundred years ago
The walls are faded, images show.
Blueness, Greeness,
Oneness, Kindness
Jingle, jangle in my soul
A time out of time, a long time ago.

GRAPEVINE -
I have a wonderful storefront display on Shattuck St. in downtown Lowell, right across the street from the New England Quilt Museum and the Revolving Museum (talk about placement!). It is part of the Lowell Arts Walk which culminates in a juried panel of judges awarding prizes for the artwork. First prize is $1000.00.(fingers crossed.) Check it out if you are in the area.
I am working on several commissions for private patrons. I have one that will soon be installed on the front porch of a house in Boxborough….how cool is that? I am also completing a triptych of mandalas for a family comprised of themes based on their birth charts. I call this Astro-mandalogy© which uses data from the birth chart as the basis for the artwork. I am always available for custom-created mandalas should anyone be interested…which, of course, you are, right?
I have a secured date for a showing in association with The Center for the Arts in Natick (TCAN). My work will be on display in November/December timeframe. I’ll provide more details in forthcoming newsletters. This web link will announce details once they are available here: http://www.natickarts.org/gallery/gallery_future.php

The mandala that I created with the 8th grade class of the Rogers School in Lowell in now on display. The mandala, “All Is One” is featured, along with other banners, is at the Lucy Larcom Park in downtown Lowell on Merrimack Street as part of the ARTventures initiative through the Revolving Museum.
My mandalas are currently on display at Moodz Spa in West Acton, MA. They are on display through the month of June into August. As always, they are for sale.
NOTE: Change of date -> I am working with Lowell poet Walter Bacigalupo in an artist’s collaboration for the “Kerouac - Artists and Writers Project.” Walter and I are considering another piece for the display. This time we will switch roles and I will write the poetry and Walter will paint the mandala. This is still under consideration. The display will be held at the ALL Arts Gallery in Lowell commencing August 18th. The artwork currently chosen for this exhibit is a three-foot yantra mandala that incorporates male and female energy sparking in an internal triangular pattern with four keys at each point of the compass.

Before I begin a discussion of the First House (Astrology 101), I want to alert you to a few significant cosmic events this month. The first and most beneficial is the forward motion of Jupiter. On August 6th Jupiter leaves his long retrograde cycle and starts to move forward. Jupiter is the planet of expansion and all things BIG. Look for significant changes in your lives. The area of your life that Jupiter affects will vary based on your own personal chart and the location of transiting Jupiter. Any of you who have planets in any fire sign (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) or air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) will feel the affects of Jupiter as he moves through the sign of Sagittarius. This, of course, depends on the specific degree. Seek out Chris for the specifics in your chart.
Also this month Venus continues her retrograde travels begun in late July through the early degrees of Virgo and then backwards into Leo where she conjuncts (in direct contact by degree) the Moon and Saturn at 27 degrees Leo on August 13th. Saturn and Venus are not typically fond of each other simply because Saturn is all about accountability and hard work, whereas Venus represents love and pleasure. Then, when the Moon shows up at the tea party, things could get emotional. Think of the combination of responsibility, love, and emotions and you’ll see the scene begin to unfold.
Astrology 101:This month I want to introduce you to the houses. The houses are where the action takes place in your chart. Think of it as the stage on which your life unfolds. Another way to think of them is as the “stage sets” in a theatrical play. Each house has a different placement within an individual’s chart. And while each house has specific characteristics, the location in your specific chart is based on the astrology of the individual. The houses begin at the ascendant and sequence counterclockwise from east to west. NOTE: I’ll discuss a new house each month in sequence.
First house. The first house is the house of self and is reflected in the manner in which your ego is presented to the world. It is your mask as seen by others, or the persona of the person you are when you leave your home. Your bearing, demeanor, behavior, dress, and natural disposition as witnessed by those around you, are all characteristics of the first house. The first house is also associated with beginnings: motive, drive, and desire. As such, it is ruled by Aries, the first sign of the Zodiac and corresponds to Mars. Aries is all about blazing trails and beginnings, while Mars signifies drive, ambition, and motivation. Both exemplify beginning, and, hence, correspond with the first house.
People who have significant planets in the first house will see that manifest in their daily lives. For example, Mars in the first house indicates an even stronger drive than typically found. Venus in the first house represents a person who expresses love very openly. Saturn in the first house indicates an outwardly responsible and cautious person…and so on. When looking for these associations take the characteristics of the planet and place them on the stage setting of the first house and you have your characteristic.
The first house is a cardinal position within the zodiacal landscape and is also referred to as “angular” which takes into account the four points of the wheel, also including 4,7 and 10th houses (more on that in later newslettersl).
The first house cusp (the very first degree) is also called the ascendant and is determined by the exact degree on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. This is also known as the rising sign and is considered to be one of the most important positions in the astrology chart (along with the sun and moon.) The ascendant or rising sign dictates the outward personality of the individual. You could be born as a Scorpio, but if your rising sign is Leo, you will exhibit more Leo characteristics (outwardly) than Scorpio. This often confuses people especially in dating services. People think they are dating an Aries for example, but turns out the person was Scorpio rising which is a MUCH different person. If you use astrology to find a match, get the rising sign to be sure. Caveat emptor (buyer beware).

SPIRIT IN ART:
“Buddha and The Bodhi Tree” - This month’s mandala focuses on the great Buddha who sought, and subsequently found, enlightenment while meditating under a bodhi tree in Bohd Gaya, India. Giving in to the inevitable uncertainty of life, he found the answer to living and eternal calm. The following text is excerpted from Chris’s forthcoming book, “Mandalas: Spirit In Art”

“Buddha and The Bodhi Tree”
At the center of this mandala sits the little white figure of the Buddha, pondering life and awaiting enlightenment. Do you see him beneath the Bodhi tree?
Buddha came from a life of privilege and wealth, yet it wasn’t until he left his creature comforts and witnessed life first hand that led to his own enlightenment. Life is difficult. The sooner we accept that basic concept the easier life becomes. Why does that concept liberate us? It provides freedom from expectation. With that simple word–expectation–comes the seed of perpetual disappointment. Once we expect, we set ourselves up for a preconceived notion of what life SHOULD be. But what happens when reality strikes? We are not prepared. How do we prepare? We prepare for the worst, while hoping for the best.
Boy Scout Motto:
BE PREPARED

Lowell poet Walter Bacigalupo in an artist’s collaboration for the “Kerouac - Artists and Writers Project.” Walter and I are considering another piece for the display. This time we will switch roles and I will write the poetry and Walter will paint the mandala. This is still under consideration. The display will be held at the ALL Arts Gallery in
Lowell commencing August 18th. The artwork currently chosen for this exhibit is a three-foot yantra mandala that incorporates male and female energy sparking in an internal triangular pattern with four keys at each point of the compass. chris@chrisflisher.com
AS ABOVE, SO BELOW:Mercury is still retrograde and will remain so until it stations direct on July 9th. Despite its direct station, Mercury’s influence can still linger for a week or so after the retrograde, so beware and don’t let your guard down…..yet. Mercury rules areas of mechanical devices, communication-based interchanges and inter-personal dialog issues. With its transit through Cancer, Mercury’s affect is felt in the area of home or family. Cancer the ruling sign of the Moon, represents all that is familial, maternal and emotional. You may find yourself re-doing things during this transit. Transit refers to the motion of a planet through the universe.NOTE: The term retrograde refers to the apparent backward motion of a planet when viewed from Earth. This happens when a planet makes its closest approach to Earth. In the case of Mercury, this happens three times a year for approximately three weeks each time. Since Mercury is relatively close to Earth, its affect is especially powerful. If your car breaks; your computer misbehaves; or communications become broken, it will most likely happen when Mercury goes retrograde. The evidence of Mercury’s impact is readily apparent in the recent technical difficulties endured by the Atlantis space shuttle and NASA. Computer glitches plagued the work and subsequent return of the space shuttle during this cycle. You would think NASA might schedule accordingly.ASTROLOGY 101-I want to discuss Elements this month. This important piece of astrology determines much of the compatibility (or not) you feel with others. The “element” refers to the characteristic best represented by a sign. Each sign has an element. There are four elements and they are listed below with their corresponding signs:
v Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)v Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)v Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)v Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)
I have listed the elements in the order they appear on the zodiacal wheel (Fire, Earth, Air, Water). The signs associated with each element alternate around the wheel just as the elements do. We start out at Aries and move through to earth, air and eventually water signs and then begin again with the next fire sign Leo and so on. “Like” elements invariably get along; i.e. fire + fire, air + air etc. Generally speaking, most Gemini’s will get along with an Aquarius or a Libra, just as Virgo will have some sense of comfort with a Taurus or a Capricorn and so on. Like attracts like. The compatible elements are interspersed with incompatible elements; i.e. fire is followed by earth; air is followed by water etc. The basic rule for understanding elements is to associate their characteristics as you would in everyday life. For example: Fire and earth do not mix. Earth (dirt) literally puts out a fire, just as water will douse a flame. Air and water do not mix either. However when you skip a sign, you begin to see compatibilities emerge. Earth and water mix and fire is fed by the element of air. So it is very likely that a fiery Aries would be fueled by an airy Aquarius. A watery Scorpio would do well with an earthy Virgo. There are no absolutes in astrology so when I mention compatibility and harmony; I refer to these in their purest states. This is simply one small piece of astrology but it helps you to understand the foundations and the inherent complexity. If you look back over your life at the people with whom you have had a natural chemistry with it is very likely that you are compatible on an element level. I am a fire sign and my two oldest friends make up the other two fire signs in the zodiac. No coincidence we get along like a house afire (pun intended). For more in-depth discussion of astrology, contact Chris. SPIRIT IN ART: LotusLovely – This month’s mandala focuses on the lotus. The lotus symbolizes the daily cycles of life. It represents the great feminine power and opens and closes with each rising and setting of the sun. The following text is excerpted from Chris’s forthcoming book, “Mandalas: Spirit In Art” “LotusLovely”The Buddhist symbol for purity and renunciation, the Lotus represents blossoming and all activities that begin anew. Miniature Buddhist prayer flags encircle the deep purple Lotus which floats serenely in the center of this Mandala. The Lotus is a sacred symbol from ancient cultures and remains as potent today as it did thousands of years ago when it was hailed as a vibrant symbol of feminine sexuality. The Lotus opens and closes each day with the rising and setting of the sun and remains within the great cycle of daily living. Each cycle is but a small part of the larger cycles we experience as we evolve. Often this symbol is depicted in multiples of four or up to 1000 petals or more, each corresponding to a vibration central to our consciousness.
Blue Lotus shimmering, floating, cleanse and purify with each new dawn. Again we begin.Visit:www.chrisflisher.comwww.chrisflisher.com/astrologicalreadingswww.chrisflisher.com/mandalas.htmlwww.chrisflisher.com/blogSpiritual Adventurist
